5x Monokular / 5x monocular

Diese kleine 5x18-Monokular hat eine Ummantelung aus Morocco-Leder; die Messingteile sind schwarz lackiert. Das Drehokular sowie die Augenmuschel sind aus Metall und 25mm im Durchmesser. Die Beschriftung nur mit der Vergrößerung "5x" könnte darauf hindeuten, dass es vom Anfang des des 20. Jh. stammt, da die meisten Monokulare nach dem 1. WK mit zwei Werten bezeichnet wurden. Da es aus Großbritannien von mir gekauft wurde, wurde es möglicherweise von Dollond oder Ross (London) oder Barr & Stroud gefertigt. Ein fast identisches Exemplar mit braunem Leder und sehr abgegriffen trägt am unteren Deckel die im Bogen angeordnete Beschriftung "Germany", was mich vermuten lässt, dass dieses auch von "Spindler & Hoyer" für den Export hergestellt worden sein könnte, welche ihren Namenszug auch im Bogen haben. Mehr oder weniger baugleiche Modelle für den Export sind der "Spotter" und "Scout" von S&H. Ein weiteres identisches Modell mit schwarzer Lederummantelung ist am unteren Deckel mit "A. Franks Ld. Manchester" gekennzeichnet - ein bekannter Optikhändler aus Manchester der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte.

This small 5x20 monocular has a morocco leather covering; the brass parts are lacquered black. The ocular is made of metal and 25mm in diameter. As the mono is labelled just with "5x" could be a sign that it dates from the beginning of the 20. c. Most of the monoculars were marked with both numbers (5x20) after WWI. Haviong bought the monocular from a british seller, it could be made by Dollond, Ross or Barr & Stroud. Another almost identical and much worn model with brown leather is marked "Germany" in a bow alignment at its bottom plate, which lets me assume the glasses might also be made by "Spindler & Hoyer" as an export glass. They arranged their firm's name in a bow as well. More or less identical models for export by S&H are the "Spotter" and "Scout". And then again, another identical model with black leather covering is marked "A. Franks Ltd. Manchester" at the bottom cover plate, Franks being a renowned optical trader during the last two centuries.
